Stephen Strasburg

Matchup of the Day

Washington Nationals at New York Mets – 12:10 p.m.

Why this game matters – Stephen Strasburg will be taking the mound for the first time in 2013 in the National’s Grapefruit League opener against the Mets. The phenom’s season was cut short last year when Washington shut him down at the 160-inning mark to lessen the risk of injury and preserve the probability of a long and prosperous career. Washington – baseball’s best team during the regular season – was eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Divisional Series. Some have argued that things might have ended differently had Strasburg been available for the playoff run. This year, there are no inning limitations, so sky’s the limit.

Despite already undergoing Tommy John surgery and despite the pitch inning limitations the Nationals have given him throughout his transition to big league starter, Strasburg still has a red rating for injury risk (the highest) this season. Bleacer Report took a look at the injury and innings pitched projection for the Washington ace. But if the young fireballer can stay healthy, he has already proven to be among the most dominant pitchers in the game.
