The Big League Debut of Kevin Gausman
Usually it takes a few years for a draft pick to work his way up through the various minor league systems and into the big leagues. The Orioles have decided to skip a few steps with Kevin Gausman.
The 22-year-old, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft, will make his major league debut tonight in Toronto.
Gausman, a right hander, has only 14 games of professional experience under his belt to date, and none higher than Double-A ball.
He was drafted out of LSU last June and pitched in five low Single-A games in 2012. After a solid spring training, he was assigned to Double-A Bowie where he has gone 2-4 with a 3.11 ERA, and racked up an impressive 49 strikeouts over 46 and one-third innings pitched.
Whether or not this call-up is meant as a spot start is unclear. Baltimore GM Dan Duquette has played things very close to the vest with the typical vanilla answers resembling “he has big league talent”, and “we will just have and see how things go”.
But make no mistake, the Orioles believe in Gausman and hope for him to become a face-of-the-franchise type of starter.
The first page in what could be a great major league career will be written tonight.
