The Greatest Home Run Call I’ve Ever Heard

manny-ramirez-taiwanThere have been some unbelievable, goose-bump inducing calls in American sports broadcasting.

Like Jack Buck calling Kirk Gibson’s game-winning home run in the 1988 World Series, and telling Cardinals fans to “Go crazy, folks!”.

And Al Michael calling Team USA’s remarkable upset over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics.

And Howard Cosell calling George Foreman’s knock down of Joe Frazier in 1973.

That’s some decorated past. Those are examples that any aspiring play-by-play announcers should strive to replicate.

But, sadly, I think Taiwan has outdone us.

A buddy of mine sent me a link to this yesterday, and it might just be the greatest home run call of all time.

In broken English, the announcer celebrates a Manny Ramirez home run by proclaiming: “This ball is long gone just like the ex-girlfriend who will never return!!!”

If I ever achieve one of my long-lost dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster, I think I’m stealing that catchphrase.

This guy deserves a Sports Emmy.

  1. Since people won’t think I’m nuts, the above Kirk Gibson video is now by Jack Buck. At 6:30 this morning a different video existed on this site.
