Maldonado Hits the Cover Off the Ball…Literally

Coaches are always encouraging their hitters to go up to the box and hit the cover off the baseball. Until Friday, that was just a euphemism.

Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado hit a grounder so hard yesterday that the cover literally came off the baseball. It left Pedro Alvarez befuddled, and allowed Maldonado to leg it out for an infield single. Take a look:
