Alex Cobb Making Us All Look Bad for Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s Day. The one day when we are supposed to go the extra mile to show our loved ones how much we care about them; how special they are to us. It’s all about sentiment, but creativity is highly encouraged.

But on this Valentine’s Day, how in the heck are we supposed to compete with Rays pitcher Alex Cobb?! The right hander proposed to his girlfriend over the weekend, and video of the proposal surfaced this week. Check out how he pulled it off.

Your eyes do not deceive you. Cobb employed the help of a friendly Atlantic bottlenose dolphin to pop the question. The dolphin delivers a buoy bearing the penultimate question, “Will you marry me?”. Later, once on dry land, Cobb presented his girlfriend with the ring in traditional down-on-one-knee fashion (though it might have made this awesome proposal just a tad bit cooler, I can’t fault Cobb for not trusting the diamonds to the aquatic mammal). He even secretly flew his girlfriend’s mom to Florida for the occasion.

I’m happy for Cobb and all, but couldn’t he have put this off until next week? Or at least kept the video under wraps until each of us had had the chance to scour our areas for the finest in flowers, chocolates and jewelry to present as Valentine’s offerings to our significant others? Cobb’s proposal video has gone viral, meaning inevitably there will be a handful of folks out there asking their partners “Why don’t you ever do anything special for me like that sweet pitcher from Tampa Bay?”

Good luck trying to explain – or better yet top – that one.
